The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
